Dear Parents:

It’s “Read Across America” week! This is probably one of my favorite times during the school year! In honor of Dr. Seuss’ birthday, Tuesday March 2nd, we will be celebrating “Read Across America” with lots of fun activities about Dr. Seuss. Please see the following for this week’s upcoming events:

                1.   Monday- Please bring in a copy of your favorite Dr. Seuss Book!
                2.   Tuesday- Silly Socks Day~ Wear your silliest pair of socks!
                3.    Wednesday- Silly Hat Day~ Wear your silliest hat!
    4.      Thursday- Green Eggs and Ham Day~ we will be making and eating Green Eggs and Ham!
    5.      Friday- We will be having a special treat in honor of Dr. Seuss’ Birthday!

During the month of March~ we will really be focusing on reading and reading comprehension! Beginning March 1st, the students will be asked to read and pass as many reading comprehension quizzes as they can! Then on March 31, 2010, the student who earned the most points this month will receive a VERY special prize! Any student that receives 1000 points will be able to participate in an ice cream social at the end of the month! 1000 points is only 10 books! So, parents, let’s turn off that TV and pick up a good book! Remember, you can log onto www.bookadventure.com to find books with available quizzes. I am also asking parents to come in and read their favorite children’s book to the class. I would like at least 2 volunteers per week. If you are able to do this, please just let me know!
Please refer to the following for this week’s news and updates.

Bible
During the month of February and into March, we will be going through and studying the book Judges. Our lesson for the first week is “Why God sent Judges”, which is based on Judges 1-3. Our memory verse for the week is:

Psalm 24:1-6
“The earth is the Lord’s, and the fullness thereof; the world, and they that dwell therein. For he hath founded it upon the seas, and established it upon the floods. Who shall ascend into the hill of the Lord? Or who shall stand in his holy place? He that hath clean hands, and a pure heart; who hath not lifted up his soul unto vanity, nor sworn deceitfully. He shall receive the blessing from the Lord, and righteousness from the God of his salvation. This is the generation of him that seek him, that seek thy face, O Jacob. Selah.”

Reading
1st Grade has started in a new book titled “Kind and Brave.” We WILL have reading homework Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays. Please make sure that you are NOT reading the homework assignment for/to your child. I love when parents read to their children, but your child’s ability to read is crucial! First Grade is such an important time during a child’s life~ there are many changes for them and it is not always easy. Please continue to support them at home, and support me, as your child’s teacher, by ensuring that they are completing their work.

2nd Grade has also started a new book, “Sunshine Meadows” and just as the 1st graders, we will have a reading assignment Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays.

Don’t forget to keep up with Book Adventure! It seems as though the kids are slowing down their reading and comprehension quizzes. They have been doing so well! Please encourage your child to participate in Book Adventure! Teach them that reading can be fun and you NEVER know what adventure you could go on. All they have to do is read a book! The website to find available books is as follows: www.bookadventure.com.
